The Training
In 2002, IBEC (Irish Business and Employers Confederation), under the Skillnets initiative, established a network of retailers in Donegal, Leitrim and Sligo. The network had a clear objective to enhance both the quality and quantity of training for those in the retail sector. This objective dovetailed clearly with the Government’s objectives for Life Long Learning.
Initially, a group of twelve companies identified individual skills needs by collaborating with a learning network. The companies then focused on a sector wide response to training and development by addressing training requirements.
The Retail Network has developed occupational standards and qualifications for retail personnel which act as the benchmark for the employee’s performance and achievements. The outcome of this is that staff working in retail can now have their skills and experience recognised and certified FETAC (Further Education and Training Awards Council).
The IBEC Retail Sillnet programme was launched nationally in 2004, and presently the Network consists of approximately eighty independent retail outlets, symbol group outlets, co-operatives and pharmacies. It provides a cutting edge and unique approach in addressing the the needs of local retailers in an increasingly competitive sector.
“This is the first time that work based modules and qualifications have been developed to accredit employees with certification for their practical skills and experience”.
Sean Carlin, IBEC Retail Skillnet National Co-ordinator
The training takes place in the workplace and covers a wide range of retail areas. The modules focus on developing a broad base of skills which are essential for employees looking to develop a career in retail.
